Drive KC to Work
Drive KC to Work is a non-profit program that sells affordable used cars to eligible candidates who are experiencing employment-related transportation challenges, including:
- Working at a job that has no public transportation
- Difficult or long commute on public transportation to get to work, to get children to and from day care, and to take care of other family needs
- Not being able to accept opportunities to make more money – such as taking alternate shifts – because of limited public transportation
The program is administered by the Bishop Sullivan Center to help low-income families in the Kansas City metropolitan area find and maintain employment. Drive KC to Work obtains vehicles that have been donated to our Center – all vehicles are inspected and repaired as necessary before any sale.
Research has shown that
a car increases a person’s take-home pay an average of 41%. This is not a “band-aid” program, nor is it a hand-out. Eligible candidates must pay for their car using the no-interest loans that are available with the program. The minimum requirements for obtaining one of these loans and cars is:
- You must be low-income
- Your need for a car helps get you back and forth to work
- You must have enough income to make modest monthly payments
- All your typical monthly bills (rent, phone, utilities) must be paid up (no delinquencies).
Drive KC to Work is a multi-step program designed to ensure that its participants are successful car owners, thereby increasing their chances for employment. Applicants are screened to ensure that they can afford the car, plus insurance and other typical costs. For more information call Joe Quinn at 816-231-0984.
